An oxygen flow measurement device is a medical instrument designed to regulate and control the flow of oxygen to patients who require supplemental oxygen therapy. Commonly referred to as an oxygen flowmeter, this cylindrical device features a clear indicator that displays the flow rate in liters per minute (L/min). It connects to an oxygen source such as a gas cylinder or concentrator and delivers the gas through equipment like nasal cannulas, oxygen masks, or tracheostomy tubes.

Flowmeters are critical in hospital, clinical, and home care settings, especially for individuals with respiratory conditions. Most devices are designed to provide precise flow control in the range of 1 to 15 L/min, as prescribed by physicians based on the patient’s health condition, age, and treatment plan. One of the most widely used types is the Thorpe tube flowmeter, which consists of a vertical calibrated tube and a float that rises with the increasing flow. Another advanced type is the digital flowmeter, which uses sensors to measure the oxygen flow rate and display it on a digital screen, offering greater precision and readability.

Many flowmeters also include pressure gauges, humidification chambers, and safety valves to ensure optimal delivery and patient safety.
